Feeding your dog

Feeding your dog a good balanced diet.

Since your dog won’t be out hunting for his food, it’s your responsibility to give him the right nutrients. But you know that he’d eat just about anything you offered him. So why shouldn’t you just scrape the family leftovers into his bowl twice a day?

The science behind a balanced diet.

Fundamental to your dog’s health and well-being is the right balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Each nutrient must be in balance with the energy content of the diet and with the other nutrients. The balance will also need to change depending on your dog’s lifestage or lifestyle.

Home prepared or packaged?

Your dog has different requirements to you for basic nutrition and a number of essential nutrients. This means that often your meals won’t meet his needs without excessive overfeeding. Putting together a balanced diet for your dog on your own takes a big commitment in terms of time, effort and understanding. It’s easy to get it wrong – leading to obesity or a loss of health.

On the other hand, decades of science and expertise have gone into most reputable brands of packaged dog foods. You’ll get guaranteed, consistent quality, whether the food is complete or complementary, dry or moist. In fact, today’s Pedigree™ range is the result of over 60 years of research.

Quite simply, feeding a complete diet like Pedigree™ is the easiest way to ensure that all nutritional requirements are met.

Watch out, it’s easy to overfeed.

Dogs instinctively tend to 'stock up for the lean times'. The right number of calories depends on your dog’s size, his breed and the amount of exercise he’s getting. Life stage can make a big difference too: puppies, adult dogs, senior dogs, pregnant and lactating bitches all have different energy requirements that you need to take into account when you fill that bowl.
