Puppy proof your yard, shed and garage

Check for these outdoor hazards.

  • A pond or pool. If he can get in, make sure he can get out. Train him to rescue himself as soon as possible.
  • Poisonous plants. Check at the nursery before you buy. Remember, even dead, dry leaves can be toxic.
  • Snail pellets and other pesticides. It’s time to switch to natural pesticides – there are excellent options available.
  • Rubbish bins or bags. Very tempting, but potentially lethal.
  • The garage and shed. Anti-freeze is particularly appetising (and fatal) to dogs, so clean up all spills, put all chemicals and paints out of reach, check for loose wiring and keep doors locked.
  • An open gate or holes in the fence. If he can get out, he will. (If you don’t have a fence, you won’t be able to leave him outside on his own.) Puppies are born diggers, so check the fence regularly. But don’t take any chances: always keep his collar on and, preferably, have him microchipped.
